What Was the Meaning of Jesus’ anointing in Matthew 26?

Before He died, Jesus was anointed, as described in Matthew 26. The basic answer to this question comes in Matthew 26:12: “For when she poured this perfume upon My body, she did it to prepare my body for burial.” Jesus used this opportunity to teach His disciples once again that He was going to die (cf. Matthew 16:21-22).. Instead of being a glorious Conquering Messiah arriving to rule, He was going to be a Mournful Messiah who came to die for humanity’s sins at this time, as per the predictions of Isaiah 52:13-53:12.

The anointing that made Jesus the Christ came via the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38; cf. Luke 3:21-22; 4:18; Isaiah 61:1), not by water. So Jesus clearly was the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One, before Mary Magdalene poured this very expensive perfume on Him.
